While reflecting on the Feast of St Joseph celebrated this week (Tuesday 19th March), one of our dear family friends happened to mention something which I hadn't pondered upon - until now! - I'm sure that many of our theology experts will be familiar with this; but to us "the lay" its something we might not have considered.
He said: "Anthony do you realise that in the Bible, St Joseph does not say a single word..."
And yet our family, (as do many other families within our Catholic Church) has entrusted our prayers and our walk in faith to him in a huge way - relying on his wonderful intercession.
Many of our great Saints have encouraged us to seek the assistance of St Joseph for any need; but most useful is his help in matters concerning the family.
St Thomas Aquinas
"Some Saints are privileged to extend to us their patronage with particular efficacy in certain needs; but do not in others, but St Joseph has the power to assist us in all cases, in every necessity, in every undertaking."
St Teresa of Avila
To other Saints Our Lord seems to have given power to succor us in some special necessity - but to this glorious Saint, I know by experience, he has given the power to help us in all..."
And so God is glorified once again, in that faith can instil within us a burning desire to call upon the assistance of one who remained so silent within the context of the Bible, but in his silence, his utter obedience, God's grace shines on St Joseph in the most powerful way.
